Does your Windows PCs or servers have a defense for the notorious Conficker worm and other worms or viruses? First of all, if your answer is no, let's change that right now.
To get free software protection against the Conficker worm, go to this Microsoft website, and follow the instructions:
That download from Microsoft insures that you have the latest malicious software removal tool downloaded to your Windows PC.
Now, at this point, we hope that every reader here can answer "yes" to the question in the first paragraph. But just for good discussion, let's go ahead and talk about this so-called "doomsday" worm. You may have heard that this worm is very dangerous, and can cause you great financial distress:
1)
It can infect your computer, even when left unattended or at night, unless you unplug your computer from the internet -- the data cable(s) -- not the power cable.
2)
Once infected, its primary feature -- the keylogger -- records and transmits every keystroke -- even backstrokes -- that you make. This means that when you enter in credit card data, bank data, passwords, etc., the worm would have recorded and sent this data to the cyber crook that sent it -- a crook that usually resides outside of United States borders.
3)
Once this data is received by the cyber crook, he uses it to move money from your account, to his.
4)
What's more, the worm will prevent you from going to security websites, such as Microsoft.com, Norton or Trend Micro, because the cyber crook(s) who authored it knows that there are fixes there for that worm.

Wondering if you have the worm already? One surefire way to tell is, after completing the download that was suggested above, run the full scan that Microsoft included. Now, if you have not done the download, it may take several hours -- depending on your PC -- to complete a full scan. This scan will let you know how many, if any, infected files that your computer may be harboring.
If your computer is found to be infected, and the removal tool did not help, this is where your PC support company comes in. They can identify and remove the threat from your PC. What you need to do first, without hesitation though, is alert your bank of the intrusion.
Second, you will have to change your passwords, using a non-public computer, that you know is not infected.
Third, you must check all of your bank statements for suspicious activity.
For future protection against such attacks, we suggest that you :
A) Keep your WIndows PC up to date with all of the Microsoft security downloads. Downloads should be set for "automatic" and done on a daily basis. (Click on the blue rotating "email" icon above if you need instructions.)
B) Get some good protection for your PC from a well-known software security company. Even Microsoft warns that their downloads are not a replacement for anti-virus software.
C) Back up your data, and back it up often. Also, make sure that you can locate your boot CD. These tips make a huge difference if you ever get a serious malware infection.
